Thesis resume

Croatian coasts of Istria and Dalmatia bear witness, during the Antiquity, to a long tradition of sewn boat building where the ligatures were used to assemble, in whole or in part, the elements of the hull. Alongside these boats of local origin and construction, research attests to the existence of ships built using the "tenon and mortise" assembly technique that was widespread in the Mediterranean from the 4th century BC. In the Kupa River, barges assembled with metal clamps bear witness to another tradition specific to the Danubian hydrographic basin. This thesis focuses on the study of the wood of nine shipwrecks dated between the end of the Bronze Age and late Antiquity. It implements a wide range of laboratory analysis methods combining xylology (identification of the wooden species), dendromorphology (determination of cutting type and tree morphology), dendrochronology and radiocarbon dating. The comparison between the results of these analyzes and the architectural studies gave us the opportunity to characterize these various traditions, to address the question of technical transfers between maritime and fluvial areas and to put forward the hypotheses on regional forest cover. By means of dating techniques, we were able to propose chronological markers in order to understand the evolution and the relationship between the various shipbuilding traditions. The association between nautical archeology and dendro-archeology has enabled us to make an original interdisciplinary contribution to the understanding of the shipbuilding traditions of the Eastern Adriatic.
