Thesis resume

The objective of the present PhD thesis is to examine synthetically and critically the types of sailing ships used along Corsica’s coast between the XVIth and the XXth c. The aim is to advance the studies on the technical and material influences in the field of naval architecture between the corsican, ligurian, sardinian and provençal ships. In a larger scale, we aspire to re-establish the island of Corsica in terms of its strategic and commercial importance, positively made up of multiple influences, in the heart of the Mediterranean. More specifically, we aim to proceed to a comparative naval architecture study, via a formal and functional comparison of the construction building techniques of the ships' hulls and riggings. Methodologically, we resort to diverse sources (iconographical, archaeological, ethnographical, as well as the study of historical archives), in order to have the largest amount of information and methodological points of view on the subject. This research will try to bring into light the connections between the technical modifications on naval architecture and the evolutions of the coastal societies. Via the study of the naval architectural data, we will try to understand the practices and the functions of the ships we are studying. Our aim will be to put them in perspective with our knowledge of the history of the coastal trade in this area, in order to describe the material and technical « landscape » of a maritime society. Therefore, the proposed study leads to a genealogical comparison of the different types of coastal trade ships encountered around Corsica, from the modern era to the first mid XXth c. and the massive motorisation of small-scale boats. Our aim is to determinate common naval architectural details linked with a region and a period and to enhance our knowledge on a specific material cultural landscape.
