Ce projet de thèse portera sur le sujet suivant "les volontaires français dans les guerres de Yougoslavie de 1991 à 1995". Des études ont déjà ouvert le chantier d’une connaissance approfondie du monde du volontariat armé. L’engagement militaire des volontaires étrangers en ex-Yougoslavie a pu être évoqué dans ces contributions, mais de manière assez marginale, généralement comme une partie d’un ouvrage plus général. On peut citer plusieurs spécialistes à l’image de David Mallet qui a publié en 2013 : « Foreign fighters : transnational identity in civil conflicts » offrant quelques développements en fin d’ouvrage sur les volontaires en ex-Yougoslavie. Nir Arielli s’est également illustré par une contribution majeure à l’histoire du volontariat armé en ex-Yougoslavie : « In search of meaning : foreign volunteers in the Croatian Armed Forces, 1991-1995 » publié au journal de Cambridge. Néanmoins l’auteur n’a accordé que quelques lignes à ces mêmes volontaires à la fin de son principal ouvrage : « Transnational soldiers : foreign military enlistment in the modern Era ». Aux Etats-Unis, le docteur Stéphanie Kaplan, professeur au Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a particulièrement étudié la place des combattants étrangers dans le Djihad, notamment en Bosnie. Ce travail de recherche a été complété par le docteur Thomas Hegghammer, qui a publié au sein du journal du MIT une étude intitulée : « The rise of Muslim foreign fighters, Islam and Globalization of Jihad » dans lequel est brièvement traitée la situation des combattants musulmans étrangers en Bosnie. Enfin, il faut noter les travaux du groupe de recherche international dirigé par Gilles Pecout à l’Ecole normale supérieure : « Volontaires en Méditerranée, XVIIIe-XXe siècles ». En procédant à une étude fouillée de l’engagement des volontaires français dans ces conflits, l’enjeu principal de cette recherche sera, par son objet même, d’apporter une contribution nouvelle à cet édifice, d’en comprendre les logiques et les enjeux pour la société française et d’enrichir les deux domaines de connaissance au carrefour desquels elle se situe : l’histoire du volontariat armé d’une part, et à l’histoire des guerres de Yougoslavie d’autre part.

This thesis project will focus on the following subject "French volunteers in the wars of Yugoslavia from 1991 to 1995". Studies have already opened the door to a thorough knowledge of the world of armed volunteerism. The military involvement of foreign volunteers in the former Yugoslavia has been mentioned in these contributions, but rather marginally, generally as part of a more general work. There are several specialists like David Mallet who published in 2013: "Foreign fighters: transnational identity in civil conflicts" offering some developments at the end of the book on volunteers in the former Yugoslavia. Nir Arielli also made a major contribution to the history of armed volunteerism in the former Yugoslavia: "In search of meaning: foreign volunteers in the Croatian Armed Forces, 1991-1995" published in the Cambridge Journal. Nevertheless, the author only gave a few lines to these same volunteers at the end of his main work: "Transnational soldiers: foreign military enlistment in the modern Era". In the United States, Dr. Stéphanie Kaplan, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), particularly studied the place of foreign fighters in Jihad, especially in Bosnia. This research was complemented by Dr. Thomas Hegghammer, who published a study entitled "The Rise of Muslim Foreign Fighters, Islam and Globalization of Jihad" in the MIT journal, which briefly discusses the situation of Muslim fighters Foreigners in Bosnia. Lastly, the work of the international research group led by Gilles Pecout at the Ecole Normale Supérieure: "Volunteers in the Mediterranean, 18th-20th centuries". By undertaking a thorough study of the involvement of French volunteers in these conflicts, the main aim of this research will be, by its very purpose, to make a new contribution to this edifice, to understand its logics and stakes For French society and to enrich the two fields of knowledge at the crossroads of which it is situated: the history of armed volunteerism on the one hand, and the history of the yugoslav wars.
