Thesis resume

During Antiquity, many accounts praised the merits of kings. Among them, the literary genre of Königsnovelle reports the accomplishment of extraordinary events by the sovereign who is presented as a hero. A vector of legitimation but also a pledge of posterity for kings, these texts have actively participated in the development of historiography relating to Egyptian and biblical monarchies. In order to understand the literary mechanisms implemented by the authors of these stories, the present investigation proposes to analyze the content of these “royal narrations” through the study of the themes and the narrative motifs which characterize them, as well as through the particular formal characteristics revealed by the corpora. A part is also devoted to the examination of the historical and ideological documentation in order to determine the reasons and the context of the appearance of the genre in the two civilizations. This doctoral work also addresses the notions of royalty specific to Egyptian and biblical monarchies as they are depicted in the Königsnovellen, thus making it possible to consider the role of the king in relation to that of the deities and to understand the function of these accounts in the within these two companies.
